    About Andrea Joki

Andrea Joki (b. 1969, Minneapolis, MN) synthesizes ideas of the sublime, myth and cycles of transformation through a range of approaches to painting. Her abstract visual language derives from hard-edge, expressionist and process-based painting practices. Interested in human consciousness and the role of sensory experience on beliefs, Joki's current research draws from many sources including an exploration of the landscape of the American West, the science fiction of N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy, and life in Los Angeles. Joki received her MFA from Kent State University, Kent, OH and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has exhibited in institutions including the Akron Art Museum, OH (2018) and the Cleveland Museum of Art, OH (2006) and has mounted several solo and two-person shows in galleries and universities in Ohio. Joki is the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in Painting (2015), a Cuyahoga Arts and Culture Creative Workforce Fellowship (2009), and artist residency fellowships that include Headlands Center for the Arts (2016), Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (2013), and the Vermont Studio Center (2011). The artist lives and works in Los Angeles and holds a studio in the Bendix Building in downtown LA.
