About Maia Gelvin
Maia Gelvin is an Arizona native who has always been surrounded by the arts. Her work uses many mediums; oil paint, clay and textiles. She is currently an ASU art major and has attended college in California for three years, but Arizona's unique art scene called her home in 2023. Her work focuses on the line between nostalgia and the unfamiliar, blending a child-like sense of naivety with the obscure. She often works in large-scale paintings, but has began to focus on smaller pieces.
In early childhood, she was greatly influenced by her family's love of fine art and her mother's artistic talent as a hyper-realistic painter. Her intense love of reading as a small child transported her into different worlds, and she has now moved on to creating her own worlds to get lost in. Much of her time was spent daydreaming about mythical creatures and eras before her time, adding to her rich inner world. She drew inspiration from artists such as Yoshitomo Nara and Hieronymus Bosch and aims to combine the bizarre with the innocent.
She has some experience as a writer at American Art Collector magazine from her high school years, and continues to use that inclination towards language to shape her artistic ideas. She plans on graduating college within the next couple of years, and is strengthening her skills in the mean time.
