About Werner Segarra
Werner Segarra is a Puerto Rican of German descent who lived his childhood and adolescence in various countries throughout the world. These experiences greatly influenced his artistic sensibility and his respect for diverse cultures.
The most significant encounter and inspiration may have been as an exchange student in northern Mexico, where Segarra immersed himself in the Mexican vaquero (cowboy) world. After spending extended time in Huásabas, a small town in Sonora, Mexico, the artist assembled images he captured into a portfolio and book.
Vaqueros de la Cruz del Diablo (2018 Trilce Ediciones) encompasses two decades’ worth of vibrant and intimate images of this rural town of 1,000 inhabitants. His relationship with and love of the town is reflected in this collection of images that portray the traditional way of life for the vaqueros, including their families, religious customs, culture, work, cuisine, architecture, and rugged environment.
The strength of this photographic material lies in his technique and an approach that manages to preserve an identity removed from innovation and the comforts of modern times. The images are architectural portraits that reveal details of the vaquero environment, where the past and the present meet.
Primary media include 6 x 17, 6 x 7 and 35 mm. The process involves 80% transparency and 20% negative, utilizing drum-scanned output to digital inkjet prints. The artist is solely responsible for all photography, scans and prints.
A professional photographer for more than 30 years, Segarra has participated in numerous group and individual exhibitions in various international galleries and museums, including Museo Arocena and Museo de Historia Mexicana/3 Museos in Mexico, The Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio, Chiaroscuro in Santa Fe, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, and Phoenix Art Museum.
